News and Updates

In this section, we describe the development and evolution of our partnership programs over the last few years with various colleges and universities, along with other pertinent additions and information about our scholarship awards. We have expanded the number of our partnership agreements, both with public and private universities.  We are continually seeking new and innovative ways to develop new partnerships with schools to which students apply and to modify agreements with existing partners to better benefit our scholarship recipients. Beginning in 2017, the Deeley Foundation engaged in a significant effort to increase the number of our college and university partnerships, and, as a result, partnerships were extended to include the University of Bridgeport, Sacred Heart University, and the University of Saint Joseph.  At its peak, the Deeley Foundation formed partnerships with 17 public and private colleges and universities. These partnerships allow us to offer more students opportunities to attend college by extending the reach and amount of financial aid offered to high school graduates.  The chart below shows the impact these partnerships have on our ability to offer scholarships.  About 30% of our scholarship funding is provided by our partner institutions. We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our scholarship recipients.  They have a 97% graduation rate, far better than even the Ivy League colleges and universities.  More than half of them have gone on to obtain advanced degrees.

BRISTOL — Four graduates from St. Paul’s Catholic High School have been awarded scholarships from the Thomas and Elsie Deeley Foundation.
St. Paul’s graduates Makayla Bloom, Acyrreh Ramirez, Lauren Kozlak, and Nick Rieger were awarded a total of $114,000 in scholarships over four years, according to Melissa Lindquist, director of marketing and communications for St. Paul Catholic High School.
The scholarship program also connects the students with mentors.
James Cooper, president of St. Paul’s Catholic High School, congratulated the scholarship recipients and thanked the Thomas and Elsie Deeley Foundation for their support of the four graduates.
“We are excited to continue our partnership with the Thomas and Elsie Deeley Foundation and greatly appreciate their generosity in helping our graduates achieve their college aspirations,” he said.
Bloom, who is from Waterbury, is receiving a scholarship to attend Sacred Heart University, where she plans to major in political science and become a lawyer.
Her mentor will be Ireland Gilmore, who graduated from UConn in just three-and-a-half years, obtained her master’s degree in guidance, and is a resident director of Centennial Hall at Western Connecticut State University.
Lindquist said Ireland was “instrumental” in helping the Deeley Foundation establish its mentorship program.
A second mentor will be Erin Brown, a previous Deeley scholarship recipient.
“Erin is working at Sacred Heart University as the student-athlete support services coordinator,” Lindquist said. “While an undergraduate at CCSU, she was the captain of the women’s swim and diving team. She recently completed her master’s in counseling at CCSU with a specialization in student development in higher education.”
Ramirez, a Torrington resident, is receiving a scholarship to attend the University of Central Florida, where she plans to major in political science and become a polyglot lawyer using her Japanese and Chinese language skills. She aspires to work for the United Nations.
Ramirez’ mentor will be Valerie Moore Coles, the first Thomas and Elsie Deeley Foundation scholarship recipient.
“Valerie graduated from Fairfield University with a double major in international business and management information systems,” Lindquist said, “She studied abroad in Japan during her junior year, speaks Japanese, and worked for the United Nations for almost six years before becoming a vice president at International Turbo Systems for 12 years. Recently, she began working as a program and management analyst at the U.S. Department of Justice.”
Kozlak, who is from Burlington, is receiving a scholarship to attend Marist College, where she plans to major in international studies.
Her mentor will be Dylan Bird, a St. Paul’s class of 2023 graduate, who is now a student at Saint Lawrence University majoring in international studies.
Rieger, a Southington resident, is receiving a scholarship to attend UConn, where he is majoring in aeronautical engineering.
His mentor will be Marcus Concepcion, a 2023 graduate of St. Paul’s, who is currently a student at Worcester Polytechnic Institute majoring in aeronautical engineering.
Lindquist said the Thomas and Elsie Deeley Foundation is a not-for-profit private foundation that was established by Thomas and Elsie Deeley’s two children in 1996.
It was created to memorialize the “helping hand” approach that they learned from their parents. The foundation grants annual scholarships for deserving graduating seniors planning to attend college.
“These scholarships are based on the belief that personal involvement with recipients creates a tangible bond between the student and the donor,” Lindquist said. “Each recipient is assigned at least one former scholarship earner as their mentor throughout college and beyond. Hopefully, this bond will encourage the scholarship recipients to offer personal support to someone else after they graduate by ‘paying it forward’ in the form of mentoring and/or financial assistance.”

The Thomas and Elsie Deeley Foundation Simplifies The Types Of Scholarships Offered

Over time, our partnership agreements have evolved.  We originally had unique agreements with each partner.  Some wanted to base our agreement on a family income, while others were willing to match our awards.  At one point, we had five different types of scholarships.  Many of these partnerships required an exchange of student information between the Deeley Foundation and our partner schools. Over the last two years, we have worked with our partners to simplify our scholarship funding arrangements by standardizing the criteria and reducing the need for a “back and forth” exchange of information. This effort resulted in ALL our partnership agreements being modified to a form of dollar-matching.  The only criterion is the amount of scholarship awarded by the Deeley Foundation.  Once that decision is made, our partners have agreed to match all or a portion of our awards. These modifications are typically capped at the amount of tuition and fees.  Students may use any federal funding (Pell Grants, student loans, and work-study) to offset their cost of room and board.

The Thomas and Elsie Deeley Foundation and Trinity College Modify Their Partnership Agreement To Be A Dollar-For-Dollar Matching Partnership

We are pleased to announce an improvement in our partnership agreement with Trinity College.  Trinity meets 100% of a student’s financial needs.  However, the formulas used to determine this funding do not always meet what a student can afford.  The Deeley Foundation can contribute up to 50% of the tuition and fees, and Trinity has agreed to match the Deeley Foundation award.  This scholarship is in addition to any financial awards a student has already received from Trinity.  The total value of this scholarship could have a value of $200,000 over four years, but it most likely will be less.

However, students with family incomes of $65,000 or less will also be considered for the FULL TUITION awards. The current tuition at the University of Bridgeport is $31,630 per year, making the value of this new scholarship $126,520 for four years.  Recipients must maintain a G.P.A. of 2.8 to remain eligible for the scholarship.

MARCH 2016

Matching Scholarship Partnership With Boston College

Beginning with the 2017 Academic Year (Fall 2017), Boston College and The Thomas and Elsie Deeley Foundation have entered into a unique agreement to provide special consideration to students from Sacred Heart High School. This arrangement limits the amount of scholarship that the Deeley Foundation can award to the amount of self-help awarded by Boston College.  If an award greater than the amount of self-help from Boston College is made by the Deeley Foundation, the amount from the Deeley Foundation exceeding the self-help will be deducted from the Boston College scholarship grants.  This means it makes no sense for the Deeley Foundation to award any scholarship greater than the self-help award. It is the policy of Boston College to meet 100% of a student’s Institutional Need. Once Boston College has determined a student’s Institutional Need, which consists of both scholarship grants and self-help awards, the Deeley Foundation has agreed to match all or a portion of the self-help award up to an amount of $15,000 with a scholarship from the Deeley Foundation.  The money awarded by the Deeley Foundation will be in addition to any financial aid package awarded by Boston College.  All of the original self-help awards will continue to be retained by the student. The student receives both the original Boston College financial aid award PLUS the Deeley Foundation scholarship, matching some or all of the self-help amount. Here are examples of what this new arrangement offers:

FULL TUITION SCHOLARSHIP – In this example, a student receives a financial aid award from Boston College of $52,000 (greater than the tuition), consisting of $42,000 of scholarship and $10,000 of self-help (loans and work-study). The current tuition at Boston College is $49,324. The Deeley Foundation would supplement this award by contributing an amount of up to $7,324 needed to create a full tuition scholarship. The student would end up with a total aid package of $59,324 ($52,000 from Boston College and $7,324 from the Deeley Foundation). The entire tuition of $49,324 could be met with a scholarship, and the student would continue to receive a self-help award of $10,000.

PARTIAL TUITION SCHOLARSHIP – In this example, a student receives a financial aid award from Boston College of $40,000, consisting of $33,000 of scholarship and $7,000 of self-help (loans and work-study). The Deeley Foundation could match up to the entire amount of the self-help portion of $7,000. The student would continue to receive the self-help portion of the Boston College award. The student could end up with a total aid package of $47,000 ($40,000 from Boston College and $7,000 from the Deeley Foundation).

Students qualifying for this expanded scholarship must apply to Boston College and request “Early Action”. Early Action applications are non-binding, and students will have until May 1st to make a final college selection. This expanded scholarship program applies only to students who have submitted their CSS (College Scholarship Service) Profile by January 1st for “early action” along with their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms. They must also meet the Boston College admission and need requirements. Students are required to maintain an annual G.P.A. of 2.8 to remain eligible for this scholarship.

AUGUST 2015

Scholarship Partnership With Quinnipiac University Expanded To Include Full Tuition

Late in the summer of 2015, an agreement was reached between The Thomas and Elsie Deeley Foundation and Quinnipiac University to expand their matching scholarship program to include a FULL TUITION scholarship. Beginning with the 2016/2017 Academic Year (Fall 2016), The Deeley Foundation will add a second type of scholarship with Quinnipiac University. The Deeley Foundation will provide a scholarship of $15,000, and Quinnipiac University will provide the balance of the tuition from other financial sources for all candidates who are Pell Grant Eligible. This scholarship is available regardless of the amount of the Pell Grant. This scholarship is in addition to the matching $6,000 (total of $12,000) scholarship the Deeley Foundation already has with Quinnipiac University.  Recipients must maintain a G.P.A. of 2.8 to remain eligible for the scholarship. Pell Grants are made based on the information submitted on a student’s FAFSA form. The formulas for determining Pell Grant Eligibility are complicated.  They involve several factors, including the adjusted gross income (AGI) of the family, the number of children in the family, the cost of the school applied to, and the value of the family assets (homes, etc.).  Consequently, it is not practical or easy to provide an example of which students might qualify for this award. The amount of a Pell Grant is established by the Federal Government. For the coming academic year, the minimum amount of a grant is $600 and the maximum award is $5,775. It is important to note that Quinnipiac University is committing to award a FULL TUITION scholarship in conjunction with The Thomas and Elsie Deeley Foundation, regardless of the amount of a Pell Grant a student receives. Quinnipiac University indicates that approximately 18% of its students receive Pell Grants. Based on this fact and after reviewing statistics about the types of students who qualify for Pell Grants, we feel it is fair to assume that a “typical Sacred Heart student” has an excellent chance of qualifying for a Pell Grant.

JULY 2015

Expansion of Scholarship Partnership With Fairfield University To Include Full Tuition

We are pleased to announce that The Thomas and Elsie Deeley Foundation and Fairfield University have expanded their matching scholarship program. Beginning with the 2016/2017 Academic Year (Fall 2016), The Deeley Foundation will add a second type of scholarship with Fairfield University. The Deeley Foundation will provide a scholarship of $15,000, and Fairfield University will waive the balance of the tuition for all candidates with family incomes of $65,000 or less. This new scholarship is in addition to the matching $12,000 (total of $24,000) scholarship the Deeley Foundation already has with Fairfield University. Students with family incomes over $65,000 will be eligible for the $12,000 matching scholarship valued at $96,000 for four years, and students with family incomes of less than $65,000 will be eligible for this new scholarship, valued at $177,000 for four years.  Recipients must maintain a G.P.A. of 2.8 to remain eligible for the scholarship.

AUGUST 2014

Expansion Of Scholarship Eligibility To Include Two-Year Colleges

Beginning with the 2015/2016 Academic Year (Fall 2015), students planning to attend two-year colleges before continuing to a four-year school will now be eligible to apply for our scholarship. Students initially attending two-year colleges are now eligible to receive the same financial awards and support as students attending four-year institutions. The scholarship will apply to their two-year college and then be carried over to their four-year college or university.  Recipients must maintain a G.P.A. of 2.5 to remain eligible for the scholarship.

For example, if a student receives a full scholarship award at a two-year college with tuition of $4,000 per year, then The Thomas and Elsie Deeley Foundation will pay the full $4,000. If the student subsequently transfers to the University of Connecticut for the final two years, the Deeley Foundation would increase the award to cover the current $10,568 tuition costs for the last two academic years. This would make the total value of the scholarship $29,136 ($8,000 for the two-year school and $21,136 for the University of Connecticut).

Students receiving a partial scholarship will receive the same amount for both the two-year and four-year institutions.

More specific details about this exceptional program can be found on the Frequently Asked Questions page of the website.
